Ants – All About Ants

May 01, 20252 min read

Hey there! Ants can be annoying sometimes, but did you know that they are super important in our ecosystem? They assist with the decomposition of organic material such as dead insects and animals that cleans up our environment. Not to mention that they increase air and water flow in the soil!

But if ants take up residence in or around your home, they can be a major nuisance. It could chomp through your garden, wreak havoc on your yard or even infest your home!

What is an Ant colony?

Ants are little social critters that all share a house! A classic colony consists of a queen, a few male ants, and a great view of female worker ants.

The queen is the largest member of the colony and has wings, which she sheds after mating. The worker ants are all female, and while they can’t lay eggs, there’s plenty of work to do! They assist in building and defending the nest and caring for the young ants.

Newly joined worker ants generally remain near the nest and care for the eggs, larvae and pupae. For them, it’s transitioning from building and digging as they get older, to some who eventually become foragers  out looking for food!

With multiple queens per colony, some ant colonies can create new colonies through a process called budding. This is when one queen takes a handful of workers and heads out to establish a new home.

 Ant Infestation Signs

If you’re wondering if you might have an ant infestation, here’s what to look for:

Live Ants: Sometimes you will see scout ants in your home.

Ant Trails: An ant will lay down a special scent trail for its friends.

Ant Nest: Look for nearby nests that are close to your home.

Therefore, ants should not be annoying at all because they have an interesting life!
