Mosquitoes
Hey there! Did you know that little mosquito has some of the coolest features? With more than 270 species hover from here to Australia, it is safe to say these subtle insects know how to make their presence felt! Female mosquitoes tend to bite so we often view them as pests. Unfortunately, they can also be the culprit in spreading certain diseases, such as malaria and the Ross River Virus.
Adult mosquitoes are typically 3–6 mm in length, with long legs and narrow wings all poised to bite with their haustellate mouthparts. Their larvae are aquatic, with a well-developed head and small bristles on their body, and their pupae resemble little oval shapes gravitating toward the tail end.
Mosquitoes As Pests
Before they can lay their eggs, they have to drink a little blood, and then they place their eggs on the surface of the water or in places that are likely to become wet. These little experts know how to find bodies of water, be it a lake, a stream or a simple puddle! They tend to stick around near their breeding spots to begin with, which isn’t unusual.
Now, of course, mosquitoes can be annoying, but also remember that they can be a health risk to humans and animals. When they’re “biting,” they’re employing their specialized mouthparts to break the skin and feed. Some people hardly feel the bite, while others may have a touch of minor irritation or an itchy welt.
Its saliva has interesting properties, serving as both an anticoagulant and anaesthetic, which helps the feeding process to remain unnoticed until it’s too late! And now, to get into the science: Everyone reacts to mosquito bites differently some don’t even react at all and others might be itching quite a bit.
As already pointed out, mosquitoes can transfer, and they have regrettably claimed millions of lives in the scourge of diseases. Here’s a summary of some of the diseases they can transmit:
Malaria
Round Worm
Filariasis
Ross River Virus
Murray Valley Encephalitis Virus
Dengue Virus
Barmah Forest Virus
One of the best ways to keep mosquitoes at bay is by reducing their breeding spots around your home or business. Make sure to eliminate any standing water, and you’ll be doing your part to help manage these pesky little insects!
Stay safe and enjoy your time outdoors!
