Protect Yourself Against Tick Bites This Summer
Summer is one of the best seasons to enjoy the great outdoors, but it’s prime tick time. They can transmit diseases such as Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and others. But don't worry! Here are some more tips to help you keep those little critters away so you can have a tick-free summer.
Avoid Tick Habitats
When you’re out enjoying nature, try to stay on well-trodden paths. Ticks tend to hang out in wooded, bushy areas, on the prowl for their next meal so avoid tall grasses and overgrown areas.
Tick-Proof Your Yard
Maintain the grass as short as possible, helping to make your lawn less appealing to ticks. To keep ticks from crossing from your yard to wooded areas, consider planting a barrier such as mulch or gravel. And scan for mice and deer both can bring ticks even closer to your home. That's a whole lot of fencing, piled high.
Dress Smart
Choose light-colored, loose-fitting clothing that covers your arms and legs when you are gardening, hiking or camping. This means it is easier to find the tick. You can also purchase clothing that has been treated in advance with tick repellent for added protection.
Pants in Socks Trick
Ticks don’t fly, and they don’t jump, but they’re excellent at scrambling onto hosts as they pass. Tuck your pant legs into your socks to form a tick barrier duct tape can help seal the deal.
Use Repellents
Consider using repellents containing DEET, permethrin, or picaridin. Permethrin can be applied to clothes and is great for keeping ticks away without putting it directly on your skin. Always follow the directions on the product label.
Be Prepared
Stock a first aid kit with tweezers. If a tick does get on your skin, use the tweezers to gently pull it out, grabbing the head of the tick close to your skin. Next, wash the bite site and your hands very well.
Shower After Being Outdoors
A quick shower can help rinse off any unattached ticks and it is a good opportunity to do a thorough tick check on yourself. It’s an easy game, but it makes a big difference.
Check Yourself, Your Kids, and Pets
When you come in from outside, do a tick check all over your body. Use a mirror to check those hard-to-see areas. And check your pets and gear too, and treat them with approved tick-control products.
Laundry Tips
After an outdoor outing, drop your clothing in the washer with hot, soapy water and then toss them in a hot dryer to kill any lingering ticks.
With these tips in mind, you’ll be on your way to a fun and safe, tick-free summer! Be safe and have fun out there!
