The Huntsman Spider

March 16, 20251 min read

The huntsman spider is a very fast little thing! They have long, hairy legs that can be intimidating due to their size.

These tend to scare the bejesus out many newcomers and tourists to Australia, largely due to the country’s reputation for having some reasonably crazy wildlife. It’s a reasonable concern  these spiders can get pretty big!

I remember one hot summer evening, I went downstairs to make a bottle for my baby. To my shock, I saw a big huntsman spider on the wall with its legs out! But it didn’t linger long, because I promptly handled it.

A haphazard Australian comedian who has a hate-hate relationship with spiders used to joke about the huntsman’s name when he had a show. He knows they’re perfectly harmless, but with a name like Hunts… Man… it’s easy to get a bit spooked! (Remember, they’re harmless!)

These spiders can grow up to 15 cm leg-to-leg. Their flat bodies allow them to squeeze into hiding places, like under bark.

Although a huntsman spider’s bite can hurt, the arachnids are not life-threatening like some other Australian spiders. This female huntsman is also a pretty dedicated mom! She can lay as many as 200 eggs, and will aggressively defend them, starving herself and going without water for as long as three weeks. Talk about dedication!
